“I was a drama school student when I discovered Charlie Carter’s work. I was flicking through Spotlight trying to gauge which photographer to go and spend my hard earned money on. I was an usher at the Royal Court at the time and forking out for head shots while in the middle of training was, and still is, a big deal. I stumbled upon this totally arresting portrait of the actor Douglas Henshall and was instantly sold. She (Charlie) has caught the grandeur of what this actor could do. She hadn’t made him look any better, she had made him look like the HIM I saw on stage. And a stage actor off stage, as many of you well know, is often very different to a stage actor on. There’s a moment on the boards where every actor revels, and this moment is different for each. Whatever Doug’s was, Charlie had caught it. Does that make any sense?

That was nearly ten years ago, and I keep going back. No one else knows how to frame, light and make me look even half the actor I am on a good day. I don’t know what she does to achieve the end result, and I’ve tried to watch her as she shoots you to see if I can pick it up. It would save me a lot of money! But I think Charlie’s secret is really quite simple. Ease. She puts at rest any misconstrued idea that a photo shoot must be work, and by the time you realise this fact the session is over. I think thats the mark of a photographer who just IS. “
